Bartholomew Roberts—later nicknamed “Black Bart”—was a Welsh captain who, in just 1719–1722, became one of the most successful pirates of the age, ranging from the Americas to West Africa and taking hundreds of prizes. He’s also credited with enforcing a strict shipboard code of articles. Roberts’ run ended in February 1722, killed in a Royal Navy fight off Cape Lopez on the West African coast.
